Astronaut Discloses Depression Following Deluge of Backlash Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also carried celebrity crewmates.
The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a public message, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.
She described the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her studies and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her background – was overshadowed under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She concluded that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the mission, such as increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a brief suborbital flight that crossed the edge of outer space.
