In a decisive final ballot, far-right candidate José Antonio Kast has secured the presidency in Chile.

A Clear-Cut Triumph

With more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast secured 58.17% of the vote, defeating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.

This marks Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having in the past been lost by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.

Campaign Centered On Security and Immigration

Noted for his staunch Catholic views and regard for the era of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was mostly focused on promises to address growing insecurity and radically reduce immigration.

He repeatedly blamed immigrants, notably the around 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. During the campaign, he gave an final demand for them to leave before the new term begins or face removal.

His proposals featured controversial measures such as constructing detention centers, border walls, security fences, and bolstering the army presence on the northernmost border.

Part of a Regional Wave

Many analysts interpret Kast's win as fitting into a broader conservative shift in South America, similar to recent political outcomes in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Yet, other analysts further describe it as a extension of the regular alternation of power between left-wing and right leadership since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.

Leading Lacking a Strong Majority

Despite his clear electoral victory, Kast is not expected to have an overall majority in parliament, not in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even when all rightwing parties are grouped together.

This legislative landscape could complicate his policy goals, such as a promise to reduce public spending by $6 billion within a year and a half—a plan for which he has not provided concrete steps.

"We have several aspects about how a Kast administration will operate that are uncertain because he has not said the way he will do them," said a political analyst.

The professor stated, "In terms of fiscal matters, it is very likely we will see adjustment measures typical of the right. However where there is far less ambiguity is on public safety, because that has been his central theme across the campaign."
