Ghostface OG Star Matthew Lillard Is Anxious He Could Spoil the Franchise with Scream 7.
The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a massive gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment marks the legendary return of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.
"Returning to a character you played in your twenties when you're 55 was a daunting task that kept me up at night," the actor reveals.
A Triumphant Comeback for Fallen Characters
Reports have confirmed that a trio of distinct characters from earlier films are set to return in this latest sequel, despite dying in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their resurrection remains a mystery. Fans should prepare for the return of the endearing and nearly unkillable cop Dewey Riley, the director and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and a member of the original killer pair, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Legendary Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the franchise for the first occasion since a small cameo is a dream come true, even if he is terrified about the audience response. The performer clearly remembers the precise instant he received the news from the original writer.
"I remember the phone call. I recall the small talk. I remember him posing the question. That moment is permanently etched on my psyche," he states. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has attained cult status in the decades since the 1996 movie was released, which left Lillard feeling quite nervous.
"Truthfully, that's a role that lives in infamy, for better or worse," he notes. "A part that is now embodied in each and every Scream mask that walks around every October 31st."
The Anxiety of Disappointing the Fans
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the finished film. He confesses to feeling significant pressure about hoping not to be the one who damages the popular series.
"The outcome is either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "At the start, I don't know if the movie's be successful. I am unsure if people want to see me. I've certainly seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of pressure to not ruin the franchise. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Theories and Anticipation Abound
While countless longtime fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others return persists. Maybe they exist rent-free in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a prior storyline. Alternatively, perhaps they are somehow all alive in a bizarre shared situation. The possibility of a meta-horror narrative, reminiscent of earlier horror movies, also exists.
Moviegoers will discover the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
