Mikel Arteta has expressed confidence that his squad can persist in handling with player absences after confirming that forward Kai Havertz is not ready for the coming weeks.

Prolonged Recovery for Havertz

The German forward has been out since the summer due to knee surgery. Initially expected to come back sooner, Arteta explained the player hit a snag when increasing his recovery and failed to reach “the next phase.”

“We learned, and we were able to put together a squad that is considerably steadier and has more options,” stated the manager.

Selection Dilemma for Brentford Clash

This development creates a tactical puzzle for the midweek fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. The manager needs to decide between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who found the net playing out of position last weekend, or reinstating Viktor Gyökeres, who made a return after a fitness issue off the bench. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is also in contention following a lengthy absence.

Fitness Doubts Persist

Additional concerns involve centre-back William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the Stamford Bridge game. Consequently, summer signings Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are expected to start again in central defence for the table-toppers.

The manager is convinced the £250m spend on squad depth during the summer has left Arsenal in a more robust situation to deal with such absences.

Squad Depth Vital for Title Challenge

Questioned if more options was benefiting their title quest, Arteta was emphatic. “Indeed, because this season has presented greater challenges in the attacking line, and now the problems with the defence,” he noted.

“Our previous experiences taught us that we need to utilize players in various roles, and they have to be able to fulfil different roles if we want to compete at the highest level. And the case of Mikel Merino.”

Manager’s Sympathy for Suffering Havertz

Commenting on the setback previously mentioned by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta offered more insight. “He was doing everything. He was unable to progress to the next level and now the signs are like we have unlocked that.”

Arteta expressed his personal desire to welcome him back. “We’re all desperate to have him. Honestly, it’s a player that, for me, I admire greatly for the qualities he offers to the team, but his character, his nature. I watch him struggle on the sidelines.”

“His playing record is exceptional, he’s been always available, and I look forward to get him back around the team on the pitch because I think it’s going to be a huge lift.”
