Nicolas Sarkozy Set to Write Jail Diary Chronicling His 20 Days In Custody

Nicolas Sarkozy plans a book this autumn called Notes from a Cell, detailing his time endured behind bars.

This news was made less than two weeks after the ex-leader was released while his appeal proceeds his conviction related to illegal collaboration connected to efforts to acquire presidential race money linked to the regime of former Libyan leader.

Prison Experience: Personal Reflections

“In prison visibility is limited, and nothing to do,” he writes in one passage, indicating the account will focus on his reflections from solitary confinement instead of wider commentary on the strained and struggling correctional facilities in the country.

“Silence escapes me, not present in La Santé, where noise is constant sound,” he continues. “The din persists relentlessly. Yet, similar to barren lands, one’s inner world is strengthened behind bars.”

Court Appearance: Recounting the Hardship

During his plea for freedom, the former leader participated remotely from a room in prison, characterizing his incarceration as draining. He expressed in court: “I wish to commend the correctional officers, displaying remarkable compassion, easing this nightmare bearable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“I never imagined at this stage of life, I would end up incarcerated. It’s a hardship I must endure. I confess it’s hard, extremely tough. It leaves a mark on any prisoner as it’s exhausting.”

Historical Context

Sarkozy, who served as France’s president for a five-year term, set a precedent as ex-leader in the European Union and the first postwar leader of France to be incarcerated.

Ahead of his incarceration he declared he would use his time to compose an account.

Reading Material

It is not certain if he found the opportunity to go through the texts he brought with him: a two-volume biography of Jesus plus the novel by Dumas the famous story, a plot where a blameless person is imprisoned later flees to exact retribution.

Prison Conditions

He was placed secluded to protect him in a cell approximately nine square meters including private facilities at the correctional facility located in the capital. Two bodyguards stayed in the next cell.

It was stated that he had eaten only yoghurts during his stay worried that prison cuisine could have been tampered with. He had facilities to prepare his own meals yet he declined, according to reports. Unclear remains whether Sarkozy will write about what he ate in prison.

Defense Viewpoint

His attorney, who saw him regularly each day while he was in prison, stated during proceedings he would be safer outside jail rather than in custody. “He has faced death threats, listened to yells during nighttime plus rapid actions in a neighbouring cell as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Charges and Sentence

His incarceration began last month following a French court imposed a five-year sentence on conspiracy charges in connection with efforts to secure election financing for his 2007 presidential race.

He maintains his innocence and is contesting the ruling, and a fresh trial is scheduled for next spring.
