Outrage Erupts as Former President Trump's Comments on Rob Reiner Spurs Widespread Backlash

Individuals from both sides of the partisan divide and the entertainment world are coming together to condemn Donald Trump for his remarks following the tragic passing of acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

An Inflammatory Online Post

Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Los Angeles home, Trump posted on social media to describe the late director as "anguished and suffering". In a post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "due to the hostility he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and untreatable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".

Police Developments and Arrest

Police have since confirmed the arrest of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident. It is reported his bond was set at a significant sum.

A Wave of Condemnation from Public Figures

The reaction to Trump's post was immediate and harsh.

“What a appalling and despicable comment,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly condemned the statements. Goldberg referenced prior rhetoric from Trump about the killing of an activist, asking, "Have you no shame? Can you get any lower?"

California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "This is a disturbed man."

Mirroring this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a despicable piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just crossed a line. Now saying the Reiners caused their own demise because they didn’t support him. So sick."

Criticism from His Own Party

A number of Republican elected officials also voiced disapproval.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or rivals". Greene also alluded to struggles with addiction and mental health some families face.

Fellow Republican representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disgraceful" given the circumstances. He openly dared others in his political party to defend the comments.

Reiner's Legacy and Stance on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. During a past conversation, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the dangers of autocracy if Trump be reelected to power.

"We see authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a risk that democracy crumble around the world."

Despite his pointed opposition, Reiner had in the past shown "complete revulsion" and condemned violence for political ends unequivocally following the shooting of a different political figure.

An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal

Providing a layer of historical irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously shared the anecdote of the session, mentioning Trump's request for "special hairspray" as being photographed on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
