Taliban Employed Abandoned British Gear to Track Down Local Nationals That Served Alongside Allied Troops, Investigation Learns
An informant has disclosed an official investigation that British authorities abandoned confidential technology permitting the Taliban to locate Afghans who worked with allied troops.
Data Breach Puts Numerous in Danger
The whistleblower, called Person A, testified that people concerned by the information breach were told to change residences and change their phone numbers to protect themselves from the Taliban.
Lawmakers are looking into official management of a serious disclosure of private information concerning nearly 19,000 individuals who had asked to come to the UK to avoid the regime.
Data Disclosure Happened
A data file with confidential details, comprising names, phone numbers and in some cases relative details, was inadvertently disclosed by a staff member stationed at British military command in early 2022.
The incident became known in late 2023, when identities of multiple applicants who had sought to relocate to Britain surfaced on social media.
Regime's Resources
It appears there is this misconception that Afghan rulers do not have the same sort of facilities that western nations possess,” Person A informed MPs.
Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they possess it. Should they obtain a contact number, they can trace your exact position. This is exactly how specialized teams did.”
When questioned about if militant forces had access to sophisticated technology, the whistleblower stated: “They've got everything.”
Aftermath of the Information Leak
Initial findings provided to the inquiry suggested that no fewer than forty-nine kin and associates of Afghans affected by the incident had been executed.
A gag order concerning the incident was put in force in August 2023 and restricted any information concerning it from being made public until recently.
Security Recommendations
Due to legal constraints, the source and the aid group she was working with advised Afghan families they were working with that they had “apprehensions that mobile communications had been compromised”.
“We advised that they moved if they could and altered their mobile numbers. That constituted the crucial data that, if the Taliban acquired such data, would cause identification and capture,” the source testified.
Disputed Conclusions
The source contested that government assessment conducted by an ex-government employee had been incorrect to state that the possession of the information by the Taliban was “unlikely to substantially change current risk levels”.
“The thing to remember is that affected people are not confronting the authorities; they live secretly. All concerns relate to their previous employment.”
Person A described horrific abuse experienced by at-risk Afghans, including electrocution, interrogation techniques, and physical abuse.
“We have had young kids who have had bones crushed to force the family to disclose hiding places,” she testified.
