The British designer Antony Price, the visionary style architect responsible for some of the most iconic looks favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.

His reputation was built on his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, such as the soft-colored suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."

His passing follows less than a month after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "dress" once worn by Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in crafting body-hugging looks made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he began working on outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included several ensembles for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The fashion world laments the passing to a authentic original whose impact on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
