The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Claims Parent Company Halted Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Flavor
One of the original creators behind the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has stated that parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction for an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, that co-founded the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed how he will personally create the controversial flavor as part of a personal collection highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Dispute Between Founders versus Parent Company
The recent development deepens the continuing tension between the internationally recognized dessert company and its corporate parent, the British packaged goods corporation that has owned the ice cream brand for over two decades.
The co-founders maintain that Unilever and its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "maintaining its activist principles".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming an Emblem of Support
Mr. Cohen announced through social media that he's developing an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions for the product's name plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen declared from his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”
The watermelon has become a symbol of support for Palestinians because of its colors, which mirror the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement and Recent Changes
Several years ago, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever transferring the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming product line will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand that originally created several years back for endorsing ex- political contender Bernie Sanders with the product "Bernie's Back".
Management Changes plus Future Plans
Mr. Cohen indicated that he plans to create other frozen dessert varieties that address issues that Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly due to Unilever.
This development comes after partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at the company in September, following many years of involvement, mentioning worries regarding how the company's autonomy had been undermined following Unilever's decision to restrict its social activism.
At that time, Mr. Cohen stated how "Jerry has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience compels me to keep working inside the company to advocate for its independence ensuring that the company can fulfill the social mission, the principles which it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he told journalists.
