The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Track

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure by Critical Role, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple agonizing personal histories for characters such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, the character Fjord.

All in all, the opening appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the song choice.

The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition created by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one put out by the production company's music division their music brand. It's a great sentimental option, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.

But for me, The series' intro fails to capture the excitement and energy that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when co-founder the performer wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. This track that excites you before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the series will have some changes and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro appears as one of them.

This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to learn about the personas of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
