Zohran Mamdani Vows a 'New Era' for The Big Apple in Inaugural Speech
On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” the metropolis, declaring “a different age” and an audacious beginning to his term.
A Historic Mayor
The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.
“A moment like this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the public whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
